Training Designer (Sulhamstead)

We are currently looking for a Training Designer on a full-time 3 – 6 month on going contract based in Sullhamstead, Reading.

The Overall Purpose of the Role: 

To research, identify, design and deliver training programmes in line with Force aims, style and objectives.

Key Accountability Areas: 

1. Training Needs Analysis / Target Audience Identification: Liaise with nominated specialists to establish required outcomes of a proposed training intervention. Includes identifying and documenting target audience through the ‘Audience Finder’ process. Maintain effective relationships throughout the project, ensuring that any emerging training needs which come to light during the project are recognised and acted upon.

2. Training Solution Proposal: Act as subject matter expert in the area of training design to provide advice, guidance and propose solutions on the most appropriate design / delivery methods to meet the training need. Produce design solutions documents describing how the learning outcomes will be met through application of recognised pedagogic principles and learning strategies. Carry out research to propose most appropriate recommendations (e.g. approaches to the same issues by other police forces).

3. Project Management / Delivery: Plan (using, where appropriate, methodology aligned with Prince 2 principles), manage and deliver on training design projects. Includes co-ordinating projects where subject matter experts undertake some of the detailed design work. Provide regular updates on progress; identify risks/issues. Attend project boards / implementation meetings etc to gather information / escalate issues / report on progress towards goals.

4. Design / Produce Training Products Including Technology Enabled Learning: Research, prepare and plan learning materials, including detailed session plans, workplace resources, and assessment materials appropriate to the stated objectives of specific programmes and in line with the effective operational requirements of the Force. Design graphics, animations, video and digital illustrations for e-learning as defined in the design solution and specification using specialist software such as Adobe Flash, Captivate, and Photoshop. Where appropriate develop a visual approach for each project from storyboarding to final production. Direct video and photographic shoots with actors to a defined scenario. Define, create and influence e-learning design to achieve optimal levels of usability that includes screen design/layout/consistency and response times / Learning Management Systems (LMS).

5. Communication Skills: Communicate proposals / ideas and information effectively, both verbally and in writing. This may include articulating complex issues to stakeholders identified during the training design process.

6. CPD: Develop and maintain up to date knowledge across the sector applying research in new TNA (Training Needs Analysis) and design technologies to the benefit of the team, projects and services. Provide advice to colleagues on the design of training when acting as consultant, including advice around where to escalate issues if training solution not appropriate. Evaluate products / service based on feedback and continually develop to respond to service requirements.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

• Qualifications: Recognised qualification in Learning and Development (minimum standard required Learning and Development Level 3 or CTLLS).

• Project Delivery Experience: Attained Prince2 Foundation qualification (or willing to work towards) and a proven ability to plan, implement and review complex projects using recognised project planning methodology delivering to tight timescales, working effectively with the client / stakeholders to ensure delivery of the project.

• Training Delivery Experience: Recent, relevant and proven ability to deliver training to groups including knowledge of assessment methodology. Essential to appreciate how the end user will experience the product designed, and as the role will require delivery of ‘train the trainer’ courses.

• Training Design Experience: Recent experience and knowledge of designing classroom training and distance learning programmes and materials including assessment methodology; demonstrating the ability to maintain creativity and resourcefulness.

• Communication Skills: Strong client focus, proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels and from one to one to project board level, including facilitating meetings. Ability to identify and clearly articulate (verbally and written) issues which arise during design project, communicate these issues effectively so that they may be resolved.

• Interpersonal Skills: Confident and able to adapt style when dealing with both internal and external stakeholders, and at all levels. Ability to negotiate.

• Software Experience: Experience of design and development of web based learning content that involves video, animation, simulated environments, audio, text and other interactions for static and in future mobile delivery. Knowledge and experience of working with e-learning authoring tools and products (Adobe Flash, Captivate, Seminar, Photoshop) and the principles of deploying e-learning through our current Learning Management Systems. (If training required, this will be reflected in minimum entry level pay).

• Organisational Knowledge: Significant level of knowledge and understanding of policing or similar organisation to enable training needs to be understood during the training needs analysis and delivered upon through the training design together with a proven ability to carry out effective research into unfamiliar and emerging areas of the business.

• Ability to Travel: Must have capability to travel to different locations across the Force and undertake all assignments in a timely manner. Due to the requirement to work flexibly, unsocial hours and personal safety for lone working; public transport may not be available or suitable at these times. For this reason a full UK driving licence is considered essential *.

Full location of the role is Sullhamstead, Reading RG7
Working hours: 37 hours per week, part time will be considered.
Pay Rate: £300 per day outside IR35
