Investigating Officer (Woking)

We are currently looking for Investigating Officers to work in the Serious Collision Investigation unit on a full-time 6 month contract based in Woking.

Purpose of the Role:

To undertake a wide range of tasks and enquiries to assist in the evidence gathering and management of Fatal and Serious Road Traffic Collisions.

Key Accountabilities: 

1. To undertake tasks and enquiries that identify intelligence and investigative opportunities for the collision investigations taken on by the unit, and ensure that they are actively progressed.

2. To obtain detailed evidential statements from victims and witnesses to serious and fatal collisions.

3. To prepare and conduct formal interviews of suspects in relation to collisions and other SCIU led investigations.

4. To secure and preserve the continuity of evidence and exhibits and ensure that evidence is gathered in accordance with the provision of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.

5. To organise and manage investigations through the use of an auditable and indexed document management system.

6. To prepare and submit appropriate files for the Coroner and CPS for each stage of the investigation, ensuring compliance with CPIA and disclosure rules at each and every stage.

7. To attend criminal and Coroners courts in support of investigations and, if required, give evidence.

8. To comply with victim code and witness charter.

9. To work with minimum supervision, and as part of the team within the wider SCIU area across Surrey and Sussex.

10. To support victim families and the investigation in the role of Family Liaison Officer and/or Family Liaison Adviser.

11. On occasions to attend post mortem examinations.

12. Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and character of work as may be reasonably required, including specific duties of a similar or lesser graded post.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience: 

• Educated to A level standard or equivalent
• An enthusiastic and proven approach to investigations and willingness to develop.
• A sound knowledge of managing investigations, legislation and guidance, particularly with regard to the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act, Road Traffic Act and Authorised Professional Practice (APP).
• Demonstrable experience of comprehensive statement taking and witness management.
• Excellent written skills and ability to produce clear and concise reports.
• Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
• A flexible approach to working hours and ability to work in a team as well as independently.
• The ability to work under pressure, having a methodical approach and an analytical mind.
• A proven ability to manage a varied workload, ensuring victims and their families are updated at all times.
• Excellent planning and organisational skills.
• The ability to analyse problems and make sound decisions and have a level of persistence and self motivation to see an investigation through to its conclusion.
• Comprehensive IT skills, in particular a sound knowledge of Microsoft products Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Full driving licence.
• To drive Police vehicles for the purpose of conducting enquiries.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills & Experience: 

• Advanced Witness interview trained.
• Advanced Suspect interview trained.
• Family Liaison Officer trained.
• Previous road death investigation experience.
• Previous family liaison experience.
• Knowledge in the relevant Force IT systems, in particular ICAD, STORM, and Niche.
• Demonstrable experience of suspect interviewing, and working knowledge of custody procedures and suspect management.
• A working knowledge of Courts and Inquests, and Coroners procedures.
• Previous experience and positive approach to working in a collaborative environment.

Contract: 6 months

Pay Rate: £14.28 – £17.60 per hour

Working Hours: 36 hours per week
