Junior Technical Consultant (Manchester)
28th September 2019Wea are currently recruiting a Junior Technical Consultant based in Manchester on a Permanent basis.
The Junior Technical Consultant role, reporting to the Head of Investigations, will contribute to all aspects of the services and solutions provided to clients:
• Conduct forensically sound acquisitions, analysis and examinations of computer systems and associated media, either on site or in the lab, ensuring continuity of all exhibits and maintaining integrity throughout;
• Secure and retrieve data from computer systems in accordance with ACPO guidelines, utilising proprietary and bespoke software, in order to preserve evidence gathered during the course of investigations;
• Experience of giving evidence at court and being able to explain complex and technical information to the layperson;
• Have an initial understanding of database forensics including Oracle, MySQL, PostgresSQL, Microsoft SQL server etc;
• Knowledge and understanding around reverse engineering databases to replicate an instance and run queries over the data;
• Knowledge and understanding of the Acquisition of unfamiliar online accounts and cloud-based systems;
• In relation to databases, and to varying degrees, have the knowledge and understanding be able to identify reasons for failure of a database, decipher data and ascertain possible causes of corruption, explain inconsistencies in the data of a database, reconstruct missing data and/or log files associated with the deletion, audit user activities and isolate suspicious and illegal behaviour and live testing of systems
• Have attended onsite projects and imaged data held within a server;
• Be able to think on your feet and navigate your way around unexpected technical issues whilst in the lab and onsite;
• To liaise with other bodies or agencies as and when required;
• To ensure the work meets quality standards in providing a service to all clients; to report or escalate issues, as appropriate, to the Head of Investigations;
• Prepare detailed reports, Criminal Justice Act statements and exhibits to a standard suitable for use in criminal or civil court in support of these investigations;
• To ensure that appropriate security and access control of forensic tools, systems and evidence is maintained at all times;
• To develop experience and detailed technical knowledge of current technology and the wide variety of tools and techniques used to assist in the acquisition and analysis of evidence and the identification and recovery of data;
• To advise all areas of the company in relation to how their workflows can be improved via scripts and automation;
• Remain current on laws and procedures required for processing search and seize orders;
• Conduct and assist with proactive investigations to include investigation of more complex cases beyond the competency of investigators;
• Work closely with the Head or Corporate investigations and advise in a technical capacity;
• Work with Head of Investigations to determine best forensic analysis strategy required for complex cases;
• Assist with the planning, design, research and acquisition of new or upgraded hardware and software systems; maintains current knowledge of hardware, software and network technology and recommends modifications as necessary;
• To maintain professional liaison and membership in professional organisations for cross-feed of technical information;
• To adhere to all policies, practices and procedures;
• Maintain safe working practices in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work policy;
• To attend regular mandatory counselling sessions as required;
• To undertake any other duties that may be required;
• To be prepared to work outside of normal office hours and/or to travel as and when required;
• Work is performed under the general supervision of the Head of Investigations.
• To report or escalate issues as appropriate to the Head of Investigations;
• Have a sound knowledge of ISO accreditations and assist with their development.
